IRS: Dozens in Iredell are still owed tax refunds

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Anyone missing a federal tax refund check?

The Internal Revenue Service is trying to locate 40 people in Iredell County who are owed a collective total of $24,819.04 in returns. According to the information provided by the IRS, the average return is worth $620.

According to an IRS news release, the majority of people get their refunds without any problem. However, a small percentage are marked "return to sender" by the U.S. Post Office because the addresses are wrong.

In North Carolina and South Carolina, nearly 4,500 refund checks totaling more than $4.5 million were undeliverable.

IRS Spokesman Mark Hanson said the average refund check in North Carolina is worth $1,057.
Once a taxpayer updates his or her address, the IRS will send their refund.

If a refund check is returned to the IRS as undeliverable, taxpayers can generally update their addresses with the "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov. The tool enables taxpayers to check the status of their refunds. A taxpayer must submit his or her social security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2008 return. The tool will provide the status of their refund and, in some cases, provide instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.

Taxpayers can also update their address by calling a telephone version of "Where's My Refund?" at 1-800-829-1954.
