Troutman to look at adding MLK Day

Troutman town leaders will discuss the possibility of adding Martin Luther King Day to their town holiday schedule.

The topic is the first item on the town's regular Board of Aldermen meeting tonight (Thursday).

The issue has become something of a controversial one since it was noted in the R&L earlier this year that Troutman did not celebrate the slain civil rights leader.

NAACP Statesville Branch President Woody Woodard had launched an official boycott of the town after discovering it did not have an MLK Day on it calendar.

Woodard said he was glad to hear that it was on the agenda.

"That's good," he said. "Maybe something will happen."

Woodard said he could not attend the Troutman meeting because he was attending the NAACP North Carolina Convention in Raleigh.

Woodard said Skip McCall, who is essentially the branch's president-elect, will try to attend.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the town hall.
