Two men from Ohio face drug charges after a traffic stop by a Statesville Police Department team Thursday night in which cocaine and some $58,000 in cash were seized.
Alan Aram Kerkian of Bath, Ohio and Manuel Antone Figueroa of Akron, Ohio, were arrested for possession of cocaine after a traffic stop on Interstate 77 south, just north of Statesville, late Thursday night.
Statesville Police Department Interim Chief Tom Anderson said the Criminal Interdiction Unit, comprised of Sgt. Jacob Dyson and Officers Craig Wolfe and Jason York, made the stop around 11 p.m. Thursday.
Anderson said inside the van, the officers located the cash inside a compartment that was a part of a natural void in the vehicle. Powder cocaine and drug paraphernalia was also located, Anderson said.
The two denied knowledge of the money so it was seized, as was the vehicle and the drugs, Anderson said.
He said the police department, as required by law, will turn the money over to federal authorities, and will likely receive a percentage of that back to use for purchasing equipment.
