In response to Paul Klaene's letter regarding the compensation package of Iredell-Statesville Schools Superintendent Terry Holliday, I would like to offer a different perspective.
The most important economic tool for this county's long-term economic success is education. We have documented verification that I-SS has become one of the most esteemed systems in the state and nation. This move has transpired under the guidance and prodding of Dr. Holliday. There is no question that the entire I-SS staff deserves the credit. It has been under his very articulate, and frequently controversial, guidance that we have achieved this. How much is that worth?
I-SS is the largest employer in the county. To supervise, oversee and coordinate this critical base of employment, how much should we expect to pay?
I-SS is one of the largest school systems in the state of North Carolina. Dr. Holliday's compensation is equitable — actually a little lower — than superintendents of systems our size.
Dr. Holliday admits that his job is not to win popularity contests but to build and maintain an extraordinary school system. He has developed and implemented a vision for success. This has caused him to bear the brunt of much criticism but the data of success is completely on his side.
I-SS has one of the lowest administrative costs per student in the state of North Carolina and, yet, we still excel. That is extraordinary and I applaud the school board for their judicious use of tax money.
There is no better bargain in the state of North Carolina. It has been officially recognized just this past year that there is no better school superintendent than Terry Holliday.
Our thanks to Board of Education members, Dr. Holliday, and the entire I-SS staff for the work you do.
