A Statesville church will feature author Jan McCanless at a "Meet the Author" event later this month.
The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will host the event at 4 p.m. on Aug. 30 at St. John's Lutheran Church.
McCanless, who is also a member of St. John's, will be available for book signings and will share excerpts from her current work in progress. There will also be books available for purchase.
A regular columnist for the Salisbury Post and Senior Savvy Magazine, McCanless is the author of "Beryl's Cove and the Elvis Man," "The Case of the Doomed Diplomat" and "Great Scott." Mariner's Chapel, the Lutheran Church in Beryl's Cove, is prominent in all three books.
"Some folks consider me a humorist, others - just consider me," she says. "I love people; I love writing."
McCanless said she started writing at a young age.
"My dad was a publisher, and when I was in my teens, he would bring books home for me to preview for him," McCanless said. "Oftentimes I would write the review of them that appeared on the back cover, so I got published for the first time at 16."
McCanless, who lives in Rowan County, is the wife of Bob, mother of three and grandmother of eight.
"Currently, I am writing a fourth novel in the Beryl's Cove series," McCanless said.
The book will be titled "The Ghost of Mariner's Chapel - A Beryl's Cove Mystery." She noted that the book is about one-third finished.
"I will be reading a portion of the book at the book signing and discussing anything anyone wants to about my writing or how I got into it," McCanless said. "No question will go unanswered unless it involves age and weight."
