The two frontrunners in the race for the North Piedmont 3A regular-season title meet for the first time Wednesday, when Lake Norman's boys basketball team hosts West Rowan. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
The contest was originally scheduled for Dec. 12 but was postponed because West Rowan was preparing for the football state title game.
The Falcons' basketball squad features several players from that championship team.
"We wanted to play them, but we were wanting to play them at full strength just to sort of see how good we really were," said Lake Norman coach Brandon Jolly, whose Wildcats are 11-0 entering tonight's game at East Rowan.
"It's just sort of a strain now because it makes you have three games in a week. We play them on Wednesday, so we won't really have a day to practice to get ready for them. They're in the same position too, though."
Jolly is most impressed by West Rowan center K.J. Sherrill, but he described the Falcons as well-rounded after having scouted them a couple of times.
"They're big. They're fast. They can shoot. They're athletic. It's going to be a tough test," Jolly said. "Most of their ballhandlers are young, so hopefully we can pressure them a little bit."
