Filing for this year's municipal and school board elections in Iredell County — scheduled for Oct. 6 and Nov. 3 — begins today.

Aspiring candidates for seats on the Statesville City Council and the Mooresville Town Board have until noon on July 17 to pay their $5 filing fees at the Board of Elections office on Stockton Road.

This year, two at-large council seats are up for grabs in Statesville, along with the office of mayor.

Residents in Wards 2, 3, and 5 will also get a chance to choose a representative.

In Mooresville, the mayor's seat occupied by Bill Thunberg is up for grabs, as are town board seats held by Mac Herring, Chris Carney and Frank Rader.

Filing will also begin for the Nov. 3 election.

In the Mooresville Graded School District, the two four-year terms seats currently held by Nancy L. Cross and Karen M. Hart will be on the ballot.

In Harmony, all four seats on the Town Board of Aldermen are available, including the mayor's position.

In Love Valley, the mayor position Andy Barker's held for the past 40 years will be up for grabs. The outspoken mayor has said he doesn't intend to seek another term.

The other commissioner positions, all held by incumbents, are also open.

Two Troutman Board of Alderman positions are also up for election.
