CHARLOTTE - A line of strong thunderstorms formed just east of the Catawba River before daybreak this morning, bringing a noisy wakeup call for many residents of southern Iredell Rowan, Cabarrus and Stanly counties to the northeast of Charlotte.
The storms knocked down a few trees and caused power outages in parts of Rowan, Montgomery and Randolph counties.
By 8 a.m., however, the area of showers and storms had moved east of the Charlotte metro region.
The rainfall, which also was reported in Mecklenburg County, is a welcome change from our recent dry conditions.
A weak low pressure system is crossing the area today, and forecasters say a chance of showers and
thunderstorms will remain with us until early to mid afternoon. A left-over shower or storm is possible early this evening east of Charlotte, but clearing skies are forecast tonight.
This morning's showers and storms came at the end of a very humid overnight.
The storms knocked down a tree on South Main Street in the Montgomery County town of Mount Gilead and caused flash flooding in Davidson and Randolph counties.
The storms came at the end of a steamy night, with lows only in the middle 70s.
More clouds than sun are expected today, limiting highs to the mid 80s -- with a continuation of very humid conditions.
The National Weather Service says the lack of substantial rain since mid June has brought about a return of abnormally dry conditions to areas west of Charlotte. However, above-normal rainfall is predicted for the next seven to 10 days.
None of that rain is expected tonight through Wednesday, but a weak cold front is forecast to approach the area Thursday and stall across the region. That will mean a daily chance of showers and storms from Thursday through the weekend.
