FAYETTEVILLE
A 4-year-old girl was killed Sunday when she and four other people were thrown from a vehicle when it flipped over.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that Rainey Edington was pronounced dead at 3:14 p.m., according to Trooper A.L. Green with the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Two other children were in the small four-wheel-drive vehicle, Green said.
The accident was reported at 2:37 p.m. in an area known as The Pit, Green said.
The only way to access the area is with a four-wheel-drive vehicle, Green said. The Pit is a hole in the ground and is a popular site for four-wheeling, he said.
John Richard Croom Jr., 32, was driving the small car up a steep incline when it got stuck, Green said.
"He locked it in four-wheel-drive, stepped on the gas and it (the vehicle) tumbled over, end over end, down the hill," Green said.
None of those in the car, including Sarah Edington, 26, Candace Croom, 7, and Ivy Bint, 7, were wearing seat belts, Green said.
All were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Sarah Edington and John Croom had minor injuries, Green said.
Candace Croom was treated at Cape Fear; Ivy Bint was flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
The investigation has been turned over to the Sheriff's Office at the request of the district attorney, Green said.
No charges have been filed, Green said.
