One week after the shooting death of a Mooresville man in his home, investigators interviewed neighbors and others Tuesday as they searched for information that could lead to a suspect.
Matthew Ryan Stewart, 31, was fatally shot and his wife Angela wounded in the arm during what has been termed a home invasion in the Gabriel Estates neighborhood in north Mooresville. The incident happened shortly after midnight on June 9, police said.
With no suspects yet in the case, Mooresville Police Chief Carl Robbins said authorities have continued interviewing "those that may have information" about the incident, including residents of Gabriel Estates.
"We went out in the neighborhood (Monday) night in an effort to solicit their help," said Robbins. "We've gotten some calls, but we know someone out there holds the key to solving this."
Mooresville police said that at about 12:15 a.m. June 9, they responded to 158 Shepard Hill Drive after receiving a 911 call. According to the caller, someone entered the residence and began firing a gun.
When officers arrived, they located Angela Stewart at a neighbor's house, police said. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the arm. Officers entered the victim's home and found her husband fatally shot. At least two of the couple's children were at home but were not injured.
Angela Stewart said she and her husband were in bed when the gunman entered their room and began shooting.
Robbins said Wednesday that Angela Stewart hasn't been able to provide a thorough description of the assailant, other than to say he was "a tall male."
Said Robbins, "As the investigation progresses, we are trying to eliminate as many people as possible as suspects. With any homicide, friends, acquaintances, co-workers and family members have to be interviewed to determine any involvement."
Matthew Stewart was a registered nurse at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the MPD in the investigation. They ask anyone with information about the shootings to call 704-664-3311, or Crime Stoppers at 704-658-9056. Crime Stoppers offers a reward for information.
