CHARLOTTE - Some sleep-interrupting thunderstorms in South Carolina have moved away, and now it's time for a little heat wave.
The hottest weather so far this year -- just in time for the start of summer -- is headed for the Charlotte metro region, forecasters say.
The first heat wave of 2009 will put at least a temporary halt to our recent string of stormy days. A few thunderstorms are expected in the area this afternoon, but forecasters predict mostly dry weather from Friday into early next week.
Temperatures, which have been at or slightly below averages in recent weeks, are headed upward.
Today's forecast high is 90 degrees, and afternoon readings around 95 degrees are predicted for Friday and Saturday. The humidity also will be high, so the heat index on Friday and Saturday could exceed 100 degrees.
Highs of 90 degrees are expected Sunday, which is the first day of summer, in addition to being Fathers Day.
Charlotte has not recorded a 90-degree temperature this year, which means we're assured of 2009 entering the record book as no worse than a tie for the 10th-latest in the year for the first 90-degree day. The current 10th-latest date is June 18, in 1979.
Many residents of York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina probably lost a little sleep overnight, when a series of thunderstorms rumbled across the area. No wind damage was reported, but radar estimates showed 3 or more inches of rain fell in parts of the area.
There were some reports of flash flooding, but water levels were receding this morning.
The storms rolled across the area between 3 and 5 a.m., and parts of southern Union County also felt the wrath of the bad weather.
