While Iredell-Statesville Schools won't be offering summer school this year, Statesville High School is making sure to provide a few other options for its students before the school year begins.
The SHS summer programs are being cosponsored by GEAR UP and will be on the high school campus.
A credit recovery program will start Monday and run until July 22. The program will target students who need to recover credits lost during the school year. The course also provides academic intervention in reading, math and end-of-course testing.
"We want to give children an opportunity to recoup some credits," Principal Larry Rogers said.
There will also be a Computer Science Institute from July 20 to July 31.
This course is aimed at students who did not pass the computer competency test, which is a requirement for high school graduation.
Students will receive remediation in technology and work on their computer skills.
Forensics Camp, a spinoff of a forensics science class that was popular with students, will also be available this summer.
The camp will have two sessions: the first beginning Monday and ending July 2; and the second July 13 through July 16.
Students will learn about various sciences, including earth science, physics, biology, biochemistry, chemistry and more.
"We want to provide enrichment to spark interest in forensic science and strengthen their computer skills," he said.
The courses will be from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday.
