Businesses decorate UNCC dorms

CHARLOTTE - Dorm life can be a challenge for new students, suddenly removed from families and familiarity.

That's why UNC Charlotte is teaming with three retailers -- Bed Bath & Beyond, IKEA and Target -- to decorate three lounges in Lynch Hall to give incoming freshmen ideas of how to make their rooms feel more like home.

The effort is part of a two-day orientation for incoming freshmen.

Decorators from the three businesses were given a charge: transform the lounges into a typical 10-by-15-foot dorm room. They were given a room's basic furnishings -- bed, desk, chair and dresser. They used the remaining space to provide ideas for decorating ideas for common spaces (living rooms and bathrooms) found in suite units.

"Parents are always eager to see where their son or daughter is going to be living. Our goal was to provide incoming residents with great ideas on how to accessorize their rooms to not only maximize the space available, but to create a home away from home," said Carla Hines, UNCC assistant director of administration for housing and residence life.

Giving students ideas to create a comfortable living space supports their academic work and social life, Hines said.

As many as 10,000 people will see the design ideas during student orientation sessions, already underway. During those sessions, students and parents live in Lynch and Witherspoon halls and go home with ideas to make dorm rooms comfortable.
