CHARLOTTE - Typical summer conditions are expected this weekend across the Charlotte metro region -- which means heat and scattered thunderstorm activity.
The best chance of storms will come Sunday, but a few thunderstorms are possible this afternoon.
The heat?
How about 92 degrees today in Charlotte, then 95 Saturday, and the low to middle 90s on Sunday?
Air quality will be a concern today. State environmental officials have issued a Code Orange alert for the Charlotte metro region, which means people with chronic respiratory problems are encouraged to use caution when outdoors this afternoon.
High ozone levels will cause breathing problems, state officials say.
A weak cold front is expected to move into the region later today. That, forecasters say, could help trigger a few thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service office in Greer, S.C., say the best chance for storms today will be in the mountains and in northern North Carolina.
But the Charlotte area could receive a storm or two, and the rainfall will be welcome, after five dry
and hot days in the region.
Saturday is expected to be dry and hot. Then by Sunday, a stronger cold front is forecast to approach the region, once again setting off thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
Continued hot weather is forecast next week, as we move into July.
