After spending four years on the campus of Barium Springs Home for Children, Springs Academy is relocating to meet the increased demand for its alternative curriculum.
The Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education has given the green light to move to the Pressly Elementary School building in Statesville. It will be ready to open its doors in time for 2009-10 school year.
The school has a waiting list for the high school community class and with additional space could serve more students in the high school success program, which offers a differentiated diploma, Principal Aron Gabriel said.
The program has outgrown its space at the Barium Springs site, Gabriel said, and expansion of that facility would be more costly than outfitting and upgrading Pressly to meet the alternative school's needs.
The school is cramped for space at Barium Springs and relies on two mobile units for the community classes.
Gabriel said moving into one central location will help administrators and teachers provide more of a school-like atmosphere for the students.
Although the school will have more space there are no plans to add programs.
Gabriel said if he thought moving would hinder the program he wouldn't do it.
"We don't want to lose the positive things we've made happen," he said. "It's for the good of the staff and students."
After the move, I-SS will seek community partners to provide day-treatment mental health services to the students. Executive Director of Student Services Kelly Marcy said day-treatment services are offered to students who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder.
