Our View: Education Spending

Published: March 20, 2009

Great news came out of Raleigh earlier this week, when the governor announced her proposed budget would actually raise public education spending instead of cut it.
That and a few additional funding avenues – not the least of which is the federal stimulus money – could help Iredell County's two public school systems weather the economic storm and greatly lessen the number of teachers they have to lay off in the coming months.
Amid these frazzling financial times, perhaps the worst thing we can do is cut our spending on education. Jobs are hard enough to get, and taking teachers out of the classrooms won't help students achieve all they need to achieve in school to be competitive in the work force.
All of us – businesses, government and individuals – are having to chop our budgets and lessen our spending. One area we can't afford to be cheap about, however, is in the education of our kids.
