Josh Cox accomplished one of his major individual goals Saturday, and the Blue Devils cross country team followed suit.
Cox was the 4A West Regional individual winner, and Mooresville finished in the top-four as a team to qualify for this weekend's 4A state championship at Tanglewood Park.
"We would like to have done a little better overall as a team, but obviously our main goal was to finish in the top-four and make it to states," Blue Devils coach Michael Royal said. "So we have to be satisfied with our performance."
The Devils notched 125 team points to take fourth place behind third-place Asheville Roberson, which finished with 106.
Cox's time of 15 minutes, 58 seconds was the only sub-16:00 time and was 13 seconds better than second place.
Jordan Sledge came in at ninth place overall with a time of 16:28 to give Mooresville two in the top-10.
There was a big drop-off, though. Jordan Hall was next in 31st place.
"Alex Brito, our No. 3, got light-headed and dizzy and tripped and passed out on the last mile," Royal said. "He did get up and finish, but took seventh on our team. Everybody passed Alex and knew he was hurting, so guys liked Jordan Hall and Kevin Courson really stepped up for us."
On the girls side, Emily Nesbitt ended her strong season with a time of 20:24, good for 32nd place.
"She had a good run, that was a personal best, so she finished up strong," Royal said. "Our goal for girls was to finish in the top-10, which we did, and we also beat North Meck who beat us at the conference championship last week."
