Sisters Sandra Blalock, Deborah Hinton and Teresa Charles plan to honor their parents, Darthula and James R. Clower, in a special way this weekend.
Before their mother died in 1999 following a heart attack, the sisters had planned to renew their wedding vows on their parents' 50th wedding anniversary in 2001.
"Our parents were married 48 years and wanted to renew their wedding vows and didn't get to do it," Sandra said.
Their father passed away in 2007.
The three sisters and their husbands will renew their vows Saturday at Lakewood Park.
"We're reliving their hearts' desire," Sandra explained. "We felt it would be special to do this in their memory."
Sandra has been married to her husband, Whit, for 24 years; Deborah has been married to Howard for 38 years; and Teresa has been married to James for 19 years.
The idea for the group ceremony arose after Sandra and Whit discussed renewing their vows. She broached the idea with her sisters, who quickly signed on with their husbands' support.
"I just want to make her happy," Whit joked.
Deborah and her husband eloped the first time. "I've always wanted a big wedding," she said.
The importance of her vows have stuck with her throughout their married life. This weekend, she said, offers a chance to show Howard that.
"I didn't want to take the chance and something happen like mom and dad," Deborah explained.
"You never know what's going to happen down the road so why not do it now," she added.
The renewal ceremony has taken eight months to plan.
Teresa, who was married twice, will finally wear the white dress she always dreamed of.
Her husband, James, said although they've only been married for 19 years he wanted to renew the vows because they got married late in life and may not make it to 50 years.
"We only have so much time together," he said.
Teresa is confident there will be two very special guests at their wedding.
"Mom and dad are going to be looking down on us the day of the wedding," she said.
