Jamie Lowe was announced as the Statesville Owls head coach Tuesday, and Chris Johnson will serve as assistant coach.

Statesville Owls adviser Tom Worrell and General Manager Hugh McBride made the announcement for the brand new franchise of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.

Lowe coached the Surry Knights last year, but is perhaps best known for his tenure at North Forsyth High School.

In the five years at North Forsyth, Lowe amassed a 109-29 record while reaching the 4A West Regional finals twice.

Lowe noted he has begun to evaluate players in preparation of making offers for the 2010 team.

"What attracted me to the Statesville Owls was the real sense of community, being part of an organization with a rich history in a city that is ready for the return of baseball," Lowe said in a press release.

Johnson joins the Owls after one year as pitching coach and assistant recruiting coordinator at Montreat.

He's also coached at Guilford College and Wilkes Community College.

"We believe that we have brought together two of the most talented young coaches to not just lead the Owls, but also identify and sign the most talented collection of collegiate players from around the country," Worrell said.

The Owls will play at Statesville High School this summer and host 14 games.

The first home game is slated for June 1.
