North Iredell's volleyball team wasn't able to defend its 3A state championship this season, but that didn't make Raiders coach Natalie Tribble any less proud of her players.

"I told these girls, 'You've got a lot to be proud of because you made believers out of a lot of doubters who didn't expect you to do much at all this season,' " Tribble said. " 'And you finished among the top 16 (3A) teams in North Carolina.' "

The Raiders returned only three players from last year's team, which won all 26 of its matches in three games en route to the state title.

But North, led by setter Rachel Wells, managed a second-place finish in the North Piedmont Conference and another 20-win season.

Charlotte Catholic ended North's playoff run last week in the third round, when it rallied from two games down to beat the Raiders in five games.

"We were down like the whole first game and we came back, we fought and we battled, and when we came back and won that one, I was like 'OK, here we go,' " Tribble said. "But that third game, our hitting, we couldn't hit the ball down. Our passing got off a little bit, too, and it just (snowballed)."
