MOORESVILLE - Anoint Lake Norman as Iredell County's football king.
The Wildcats put the crowning jewel in place when polishing off a clean sweep of all five other county schools with a 12-10 edging of host Mooresville in Friday's regular-season finale.
"A win's a win,'' Lake Norman coach Scott Sherrill said after watching his Wildcats (8-3 overall, and 3-3 I-Meck) pick up their second straight — and second ever —win in the cross-town series rivalry. "It may not have been pretty, but it counts.
"We told the kids all week that Mooresville wasn't going to play like an 0-10 team. They didn't. If anything, we gained more respect for them during the game than we did coming in."
The loss left the host Blue Devils (0-11 and 0-5) saddled with the program's first winless season in what was also their first year in the 4A classification.
Lake Norman took its first and only lead just past the midway mark of the final period when James Cloud broke loose on a 30-yard touchdown scamper. Cloud rolled up 158 yards rushing on the night.
Lake Norman's second missed point-after left the door open, but a pair of interceptions, the second coming on the game's final play, thwarted any shot of a Devils response.
Mooresville snared the lead on the game's third play when back Marshawn Edwards busted free and high-tailed it 60 yards for a score.
Lake Norman closed to within one on Jaquez Vanderburg's 16-yard touchdown scamper. A missed PAT made it 7-6 at the half.
The Devils padded their lead in the third period on place kicker Michael Watson's successful conversion of a 31-yard field, pushing the lead out to the 10-6 mark.
Both teams battled turnover trouble, Lake Norman losing two fumbles and also throwing an interception, while Mooresville was hindered by two pass picks and a lost possession on a high snap out of punt formation.
