Statesville tennis standout Ali Boggs recently put the finishing touches on a sensational sophomore season.

The best, though, is still to come.

The No. 1 player for a skilled Greyhounds team, Boggs cruised through the North Piedmont Conference this year with a perfect 13-0 record.

She also qualified for the 3A state championship and was the only singles player from the county to make it.

"It was a great year," Boggs said. "I worked really hard over the summer, and ended up playing really well this year. Our whole team did a good job, too."

Boggs lost in the first round to Mary-Katherine Prince, the top seed from the East Region, by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Still, though, the experience more than makes up for the loss.

The 3A singles championship this year was senior-heavy.

With two years left, Boggs is in position to not only make a few return trips, but be in contention to win it.

"There was a little bit of pressure to win some matches during the season because I was the youngest in the top-six," Boggs said. "And there was definitely a lot of pressure going into the state tournament.

I definitely think I can get back there. A lot of the players ... are going to graduate, so maybe I can win it next year."

One of the most critical reasons for Boggs' success is her work ethic.

She plays tennis year-round, honing her craft and staying in tennis shape.

Boggs has trained with Jason Little since she was 5 years old and has played competitively in U.S. Tennis Association tournaments since she was 7.

"It's important to do that," Boggs said of training year round. "Hopefully, if all of us on the team work really hard over the summer and start practice early, we can have a decent team again next year."
