High winds attributed to the remnants of Hurricane Ida caused one death in Iredell County Wednesday.

Mooresville resident Worth Mayhew, 88, died Wednesday at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center after he was hit by a falling tree at his Oakwood Street home.

Mooresville Fire Department Battalion Chief Jamie Barrier said Mayhew was getting out of his car when the top of a pine tree fell and hit him before hitting the car.

A neighbor called 911 around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, and crews from the fire department, Mooresville Rescue Squad and Iredell EMS responded. Paramedics rushed Mayhew to LNRMC.

Iredell County Emergency Management Director David Martin said the storm, which included heavy rains and winds, created minor flooding and downed trees across the county.

Martin said some 4 inches of rain fell between Tuesday and Thursday mornings in parts of Iredell County.

High winds were the real problem, he said. Martin said the highest gust recorded at the Iredell County Emergency Communications Center (ECOM) was 29 mph.

He said the only serious reports of property damage came from the top of an oak tree falling into the roof of a home on Clear Springs Drive, which is north of Mooresville.

Iredell County EMS Director David Cloer said that while EMS crews have been busy since Tuesday evening, the storm hasn't meant a big increase in the number of calls.

"I haven't heard a lot of difference," Cloer said.

The weather is expected to improve by Saturday.

Today will be mostly cloudy with highs in the 60s. Forecasters predict a nice weekend with sunny skies both Saturday and Sunday and highs in the lower 70s.
