Lake Norman High's varsity girls basketball team made sure it wouldn't be taking a totally empty plate into this week's extended Thanksgiving holiday break.
The Lady Wildcats salvaged a split of their only two games scheduled before Thanksgiving and made a rousing success of their home court debut with a 69-25 throttling past visiting cross-county rival South Iredell in the LNHS gym Monday night.
The sizable shelling by the Lady Cats over the Lady Vikings in the two neighboring teams' only regular-season scheduled session came after Lake Norman was rudely welcomed into its season overall in the form of a 69-48 loss handed down by reigning state 3A class runner-up Forestview in both teams' season opener late last week.
As a result, Lake Norman owns the 1-1 mark that it will take with it into a shortened week of holiday rest that will be terminated by a rare weekend appearance on tap to close out this week's play following the Thanksgiving observance.
Against South Iredell, the hostesses never blinked in spreading out the scoring damage, gathering in points of some sort from nearly every one of the players seeing ample court time. Lake Norman never trailed in starting off fast and more than doubling up the efforts of the guests.
The outcome made a ringing success of the Lady Wildcats' first home game of the season.
Late last week, in a contest designated as an endowment contest at Forestview, Lake Norman found out first hand, much to its dismay, that a Forestview club settling for runner-up status within the state's 3A class a year ago had intentions of making a repeat run at that title.
The guests in particular felt the brunt of the home team's wrath in the opening period, when the Lady Cats were outscored by a 25-4 mark that, for the most part, accounted for the game's final damage as well.
After that initial blow, Lake Norman wound up battling on even terms with the hostesses the remainder of the way. After falling a total of five more points back combined over the course of the second and third periods, respectively, the Lady Wildcats got all of that difference back by winning the fourth and final period by a five-point margin.
Still, the damaged had been done, as the 21 points that distanced the two teams after the opening frame was still in place at game's end.
For the game, Lake Norman was paced by sophomore Marissa Riley's 13 points, she finishing as the only guest to register a twin-digit output. Landyn Mannion chipped in with eight points. Freshman Kaitlin Walla claimed a team-high six rebounds while also scoring five points in her varsity-level debut.
Lake Norman takes a quick breather for Thanksgiving before appearing in a weekend game against Wilmington Hoggard at host High Point Central Saturday. That comes before the Lady Wildcats engage in the first of three games on tap over a four-day span with a visit to rival Statesville early next week.
