Medicare Part D Enrollment
November 15 – December 31 is the open enrollment period for Medicare Part D. If you need assistance enrolling or changing your plan for Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage, South Iredell Senior Center has SHIIP Counselors available to help. An appointment is required. Call Phyllis Deal, SHIIP Coordinator for the Iredell County's Senior Insurance Information Program, at 704-873-8568. Qualification and enrollment for the Medicare Part D Subsidy is also available (income based). A Hispanic speaking interpreter can be available upon request. SHIIP is a program under the N.C. Department of Insurance. There is no fee for the service but donations are appreciated.

LUNCH & LEARN – The Aging Spine
Join us for lunch and an educational program presentation by Dr. Ben Garrido with Lake Norman Spine Center in Mooresville. Dr. Garrido is an ortho/spine surgeon and will speak on
The Aging Spine, on Tuesday, December 1 from 11:30-12:30 p.m. at the South Iredell Senior Center. Pre-registration required and $1contribution toward the Senior Center's health promotion programs.

Tree Decorating
All seniors are invited to help decorate the Senior Center's Christmas tree on Tuesday, December 1 from 2-3 p.m. Listen to Christmas music and sip on hot chocolate while exchanging fun memories of tree decorating when you were a child. Feel free to bring a snack to share.

Wills & Advance Directives
On Tuesday, December 1 Shazia Anwar with Legal Aid of North Carolina will be at South Iredell Senior Center doing simple wills, durable power of attorney, healthcare power of attorney, and living will documents. The service is completely FREE and is especially targeted to older adults who may not otherwise be able to afford such services. Completion of a prior intake form and an appointment is required. Yoga
Yoga is a great way to stay healthy, strengthen and tone your body. The class will be taught by Debbie Wyatt, AFAA, Yoga certified instructor, every Wednesday from 10-11a.m. at the South Iredell Senior Center. Cost is $24 for six classes starting December 2. SISC Presents A Christmas Adventure December 2-4
This senior trip is filled with Christmas entertainment and fun as we head to Myrtle Beach for three days and two nights. Enjoy an oceanfront room at the Sea Mist Resort and two wonderful Christmas shows, one at Carolina Opry and another at the Alabama Theater. No trip to Myrtle Beach is complete without shopping, so just in time for Christmas we will shop Broadway at the Beach, Barefoot Landing, the Tanger Outlets and more. The hotel also has an indoor pool and Jacuzzi, so feel free to bring your swimming suit. Each morning you will enjoy a buffet breakfast. All other meals will be on your own. Baggage handling, taxes and standard gratuities are included. The coach can do a pick up in Statesville. Package cost per person is: $230 double room; $220 triple room; $210 quad room, $285 single room. Deadline for registration, if space is available, is Friday, October 30. FREE Popcorn & a Movie
Seniors are invited to enjoy complimentary popcorn and a movie at the South Iredell Senior Center on Monday, December 7 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The movie will be Pearl Harbor. This event is sponsored by Video Studio, Mooresville Historical Society and The Firm.

Tai Chi
Recommended by the Arthritis Foundation, it's good for the body, mind and spirit. Tai Chi may help some individuals to improve high blood pressure, balance, muscle tone, circulation, flexibility, aching backs and joints. It has even helped some to lose weight. Mike Gentile, a certified physical trainer, AF instructor, and Reiki master will teach a Tai Chi class on Mondays starting December 7 from 11 a.m. – noon and a beginner's Tai Chi class from 12:15-1:15 p.m. at South Iredell Senior Center. Cost is $36 per person for a six week session. Not sure if Tai Chi is for you, feel free to come observe the class for yourself.

Day Trip - Tanglewood Christmas Lights
Join SISC for this amazing holiday display of lights on Tuesday, December 8. We leave at 12:30 p.m. from the public parking lot on the corner on Iredell Ave. and Church St., directly in front of EMS in Mooresville. We first head to Hanes Mall for an afternoon of Christmas shopping. Dinner will be at the K&W Cafeteria on your own, followed by a bus tour through Tanglewood Park to marvel at the beautiful display of Christmas lights. Cost for the trip is $25 per person. Transportation will be on a 25 passenger bus. We should return to Mooresville by 9 p.m. You can register by mailing a check to South Iredell Senior Center 202 N. Church St., Mooresville, NC 28115. Please indicate what the check is for, your name and phone number and make sure space is still available prior to mailing your check. Rubber Stamping for the Holidays
Create unique one-of-a-kind greeting cards on Thursday, December 10 from 1-3 p.m. at South Iredell Senior Center. Christmas will be here before you know it. This year, why not send a card that's made by you, unique, and one-of-a-kind? Come learn how. It's so simple! Every person will leave the class with a completed card. The class will be instructed by Nancy McKay. Fee is $5. Please call 704-662-3337 to pre-register.

Christmas Dance
It's a holly jolly Christmas, the best time of the year at South Iredell Senior Center on Friday, December 18 from 6–8:30 p.m. Enjoy all types of dancing including couples, line dancing and more. If you can walk you can dance, and if you can dance or shake a leg, you're in for loads of fun as we rock around the Christmas tree. Don't forget to bring your favorite holiday covered dish to share, NO desserts needed. Please be sure to bring serving container and utensils. Admission is $1 and the Senior Center will provide all paper goods. The Dance is open to all senior adults. Caregivers welcome. Let's jingle jangle this holiday season!

Silent Auction Open to the Public
The South Iredell Senior Center will hold a silent auction on Friday, December 11, open to the public from 11a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The event will be held upstairs in the Moore room of the Citizen Center. There are some great items that would make wonderful Christmas gifts just waiting for your bid. Need a host gift, these are perfect! All proceeds go to the Senior Center, so please come out and have fun auctioning for your favorite items. If you aren't able to win your bid, slip over to the gift shop and gourmet table, you're sure to find a special something there to take home or wrap as a gift. Come have some great fun and get some unique Christmas gifts!

Senior Center Community Christmas Show
Don't miss this year's Senior Christmas Show hosted by South Iredell Senior Center on Friday, December 11 at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Mooresville Citizen Center. The event is FREE and open to all senior adults. Come enjoy great entertainment, lots of laughs and loads of fun.
This show is sure to send you home humming those favorite Christmas tunes. There is a very special treat as part of the show this year, thanks to all those who donated items and helped with SISC's Christmas entertainment fundraiser.

Day Trip - Grove Park Inn Gingerbread House Display
Get ready for the holiday season with a trip to Asheville to see the spectacular Gingerbread House display at the famous Grove Park Inn on Monday, Dec. 14. We leave at 8:15 a.m. from the public parking lot on the corner on Iredell Ave. and Church St., directly in front of EMS in Mooresville. Enjoy the beautiful Christmas decorations and surrounds as you warm yourself next to Grove Parks' toasty fireplace. Lunch will be at a nearby restaurant on your own. Before heading back to Mooresville, we will load up on goodies at the Asheville Farmers' market. Cost for the trip is $25 per person. Transportation will be provided by Christian Tours (25 passenger bus). We should return to Mooresville at 5 p.m. You can register by mailing a check to South Iredell Senior Center 202 N. Low Fat, Low Sugar, Cookie Exchange, Featuring Healthy Cooking for the Holidays
Do you want to indulge in those holiday desserts and treats without the fat, calories and guilt? If so, then here's your chance to learn how to make yummy holiday treats that are healthy for you and guilt free. The program will be presented by Jill Ashburner, Exercise Specialist with the wellness team at Iredell Memorial Hospital. She will discuss how easy it is to make your holiday cooking healthy and share a range of recipes. There will be a variety of samples for you to try along with some coffee and hot tea. Come see how tasty and healthy holiday baking can be.

BINGO Birthday Bash!
All seniors celebrating a birthday or not are invited to play BINGO, win prizes, and have refreshments on Wednesday, December 16 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at South Iredell Senior Center. Yes, there will be birthday cake and special recognition given to birthday ladies and gents. No fees or registration. Sponsors are Dudley's Home Health, Inc. and Lake Norman Home Health.

Medication Check
Are your medicines making you better or worse? A CVS Pharmacist will be at the Iredell Council on Aging Mooresville Nutrition Site at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 18 to share information with older adults on prevention of incorrect medication, adverse drug reaction, drug interaction, and over the counter drugs. The pharmacist will review medications and vitamins seniors are currently taking and provide one-on-one counseling. Seniors may bring in their medication in their original containers or a list of their current medications for review. This event is part of a health promotion outreach program coordinated by South Iredell Senior Center.

The Facts about Reverse Mortgage
If you're considering a reverse mortgage, United Family Services encourages you to attend a free session on "The Facts about Reverse Mortgage." The session is scheduled for Jan. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at South Iredell Senior Center, 202 N. Church St. Mooresville. Guest speaker Barbara Shear, who specializes in reverse mortgages with a Mooresville-Lake Norman area lender, will share information on how the reverse mortgage works, the common misconceptions that people have about the process, how the program has changed over the years and how homeowners over 62 can benefit from it. Shear has more than 20 years of experience working in the mortgage industry in North Carolina and Florida. "Six years ago, I discovered reverse mortgage and saw how I could make a difference in people's lives by getting the word out and helping them through the reverse mortgage process," she says. Please call the Senior Center if you plan to attend.

Weight Loss Challenger
The Weight Loss Challenger is a fun 12 week program designed to help participants to change their nutritional habits which lead to permanent weight loss, become more active and lead a healthier lifestyle. The friendly competition and weekly accountability help participants stay focused on their goals. The subjects covered include: protein 101; meal plans, snacking & water; metabolism; carbohydrates; shopping and cooking; cellular nutrition; nutrition labels; fats; portion control, digestive health; dinning out; fiber; sugar; exercise; heart health; and maintenance –long term health. On Thursday, January 21 at 10:30 a.m. individuals will weigh in, take measurements, and receive an introduction to the program. The class will meet every Thursday from Jan. 28 – April 15 from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. at South Iredell Senior Center. Individuals will weigh in each week and take measurements at the end. $35 is collected from each participant and the cash prizes gets paid out as follows: 50% to the winner for largest percent of body weight removed, 30% to 2nd place and 20% to 3rd place. There is penalty money collected from weight gainers - $1 per full pound gained and $5 for missing a class; one missed class is allowed. This money gets paid to the biggest inch loser who did not win the other cash prizes. The $5 and $35 is used to pay for weekly prizes, and trophies and copies of handouts. All monies collected go back to the participants. Have fun, get healthy and win money! Registration and payment is required by January 19. Make check payable to Mooresville Nutrition.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
SISC is now accepting registration for this evidence- based program. Space is limited. Highly recommended by the Arthritis Foundation, the class is designed for people with arthritis and is a recreational program. Mike Gentile, an Arthritis Foundation certified instructor will teach the class starting Monday, January 25. The cost sharing amount for the class is $36 per person. The class meets every Monday from 12:15-1:15 p.m. for six weeks. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by Friday, January 22. The facility and instructor can accommodate individuals interested in taking the class who have a physical disability or impairment.

SISC Silver Strider's Walking Club
If you enjoy walking to improve your health, the South Iredell Senior Center is more than happy to help motivate you. As part of this health promotion program, you will receive special invitations to educational workshops and luncheons that can help you improve your health. This year there are several incentive awards to be earned based on the miles you walk and improvement you make, they are: two full course meals compliments of Cracker Barrel, two tickets to Amstar Movie Theater, a 36 can collapsible cooler provided by Harris Teeter on Hwy 150, and a fully packed gift basket provided by Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. Sign-ups and documentation for this year's walking program toward winning incentives starts this month, so get started. Remember indoor walking is available at the Senior Center Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the downstairs area.

SISC Readers Theatre Community Outreach
The SISC Readers Theatre is a fun and exciting group to join. The group performs in the community for FREE as part of an outreach effort, offering a wide range of performances some of which include funny but educational material that address such issues as ageism, social security, medication safety, stereotyping, age discrimination and other skits just to make you laugh. They even have a puppet show designed for kids or anyone who's interested in puppet theatre. If you would like the Readers Theatre Group to perform for your group or club, call Tina at the South Iredell Senior Center. Skits and programs can be geared toward specific groups. Sponsors, new members, and volunteers are encouraged to get involved with the Readers Theater. No Experience is necessary. Come have fun, feel younger and be proactive in maintaining good mental health. The Readers Theatre is led by Rodney Nall.

Support Groups held at South Iredell Senior Center
*Stroke Survivor Support Group meets the 1st Thursday of each month from 1-3 p.m. The group reaches out to individuals in the community and supports them in coming to terms with how their life has changed and issues they face in every day life.
*Diabetes Support Group meets on the 4th Monday at 12 noon.
*Dementia Support Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday at 2 p.m. and is designed for caregivers of individuals with dementia. Daycare provided upon prior request and arrangement. These support groups are open to the community. This group is supported by the Western Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
*Parkinson Support Group meets the 3rd Tuesday at 2 p.m. led by Lake Norman Inspirations.

Assistive Devices
Assistive Devices are available through South Iredell Senior Center's loan closet, such as walkers, bath benches, wheelchairs, etc. If you are a senior and in need of an item or know of someone who is, please check with the center for a listing of items available to be loaned. There is no charge and you use the item for as long as you need it! For more information call the Center at 704-662-3337.

Senior Volunteers needed for Public Schools
The Senior Education Corps program is a statewide volunteer program designed to connect seniors and children. Senior adults can give as little or as much time as they like and make a difference in the lives of our children. Areas needing volunteers include; classroom readers, one-on-one tutoring, test proctors, lunch buddies, etc. Giving as little as 30 minutes a week could help improve the life of a child. South Iredell Senior Center Volunteers Needed:
Readers Theatre, Senior Center Scrap Booking, Senior Games, SISC Fundraiser Events, delivering home-delivered meals, providing sitter services, telephone reassurance, server for congregate meals, friendly visits, outreach, entertainers, decorator, friendly caller, puppet theatre, library assistant, special projects, and any volunteer willing to teach and share their talents with others. Volunteer Instructors needed for: Tap dancing, basket weaving, flower arranging, beginning billiards, art and square dancing.

Donations Needed
South Iredell Senior Center will continue taking donations of items in good condition for their gift shop. Please take a look through your closets and Christmas boxes to see what you have that you can donate. Donations may be dropped off at the Senior Center Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Other items the center needs include: old cell phones (no chargers please), table clothes, cotton yarn, kitchen hand towels, ribbon, silk flowers, baskets, games, cotton material (not scrap pieces), hand made crafts, used jewelry, any kind of nick-knack items, office supplies, etc. A contribution form is provided for tax purposes. Thanks to all who help the Senior Center!
