TROUTMAN — Tina Ferger wakes up every morning thanking God that her husband pushed her toward her dream.
Before August, the big obstacle standing in the way of opening her antique and home decor shop, Back in the Day, was fear, she said.
The economy was too rough to open new store, and she had just finished a three-month stint of running a booth at the Ole World Market.
"They kept saying 'You can do it,' " said Ferger, referring to her three children and husband, Phil. "I wasn't going to do it. God always puts someone in your life to encourage you."
Ferger worked in the office of her husband's Termitech South franchise for nearly 10 years. She wanted to break out and do something on her own.
She explained to her husband that the extermination business was his passion, and she wanted to pursue her own.
The feedback she received after renting a booth at the Ole World Market made her think she needed a storefront because people wanted to see and interact with her. Phil thought it was a good idea, but Ferger was hesitant.
She began looking, and in July, the small storefront on Wagner Street became available.
Nearly three months after the Aug. 4 opening, Ferger already has expansion plans for the small store along Wagner Street that offers scented candles, quilts, antique furniture and the other homey touches.
Named after Ferger's favorite phrase, the store is the family's way of giving back to others, Phil said.
"It's a people thing," he said. "We try to give back what we can. Business is very awesome."
Most of the displays are made up of antiques Ferger and her husband picked up from local shops and Pennsylvania Amish country.
Ferger said she places furniture and different antiques together to show people different decorative possibilities.
"It's just a creative thing I've been blessed with," Ferger said. "We try to keep unique items. A lot of these people who have moved from New York and Pennsylvania, they like this stuff."
One of the perks of running a store has been the new friends she has made, Ferger said. Another is the chance to share her faith with others.
"You never know what God has in store for you," Ferger said.
