The season's biggest wrestling match in Iredell County — and the biggest basketball game in the state — were among a slew of area high school games postponed Friday due to the threat of inclement weather.
Lake Norman and Mooresville's showdown on the mats has been moved to Wednesday.
With no other area wrestling matches and just one basketball game scheduled that night, the event at Lake Norman is expected to be packed.
Junior varsity matchups start at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Senior Night festivities and then the varsity match.
Mooresville is 24-1 overall and 5-0 in I-Meck 4A Conference matches. Lake Norman meanwhile is 30-4 and also 5-0 in the I-Meck.
Lake Norman's boys basketball team, thought to be a contender for the 4A state championship, also had a huge game pushed back.
The Wildcats will now meet Hopewell on Monday. Hopewell, generally regarded as the top team in the state, is 18-0 this season and 68-8 over the last three years.
A road win would move Lake Norman into a tie for first place while a loss would move Vance into a tie for second with the Wildcats.
That also means the Wildcats have a brutal week ahead.
In addition to playing at Hopewell on Monday, Lake Norman must bounce back and play Vance at home the next day.
Vance is 13-4 overall and 5-2 in the I-Meck with losses to Hopewell and Lake Norman. Vance lost to Lake Norman by just four points last time and has one of the area's top point guards in Marquis Rankin.
After one day off, the Wildcats then must contend with J.T. Terrell and the West Charlotte Lions (13-8, 3-5) on Thursday. And Saturday, Lake Norman will travel to Virginia to play Patrick Henry High School for its fourth game of the week.
That previously was against N.C. High School Athletic Association policy, but the rule changed this year so long as the fourth game is not on a school day.
Things could get really interesting for the Wildcats if enough snow accumulates to postpone Monday's action as well.
"It depends on how much snow we get, and whether we have to do all this over again," Lake Norman athletic director Steve Rankin said. "If we don't play Hopewell on Monday, it's going to be a chore to find out when we are going to play them since we already play Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday."
Other area contests, all basketball, were also postponed Friday. The makeup dates are below.
Statesville will play at South Rowan on Monday, Feb. 1
East Rowan will play at North Iredell on Wednesday, Feb. 3
West Iredell will play at Carson on Thursday, Feb. 4
West Charlotte will play at Mooresville on Friday, Feb. 5.
Maiden will play at South Iredell on Monday, Feb. 8
