Three Jewish congregations in Lake Norman are hosting a free performance by the University of Pennsylvania Shabbatones on Saturday, Jan. 10.
This will be the first event hosted by Beth Shalom of Lake Norman (www.bslkn.org), Lake Norman Jewish Congregation (www.lakenormanjc.org) and Congregation Emanuel (www.congregationalemanuel.us) , the three synagogues in Lake Norman.
The Shabbatones, a student-run Jewish a cappella group, are one of the premier Jewish a cappella groups in the country, and are known for their energetic arrangements and entertaining performances.
The January performance will begin with a short Havdalah service at 7:30 p.m. in Room 900 of the Davidson College Alvarez Student Union. Havdalah (from the Hebrew word "l'havdil," meaning "to separate") is performed on Saturday evenings to separate Shabbat from the rest of the week.
"The Shabbatones concert allows us the opportunity to work with other area Jewish organizations to bring a unique and quality concert to our area," said Beth Cupp, President of Beth Shalom of Lake Norman. Cupp said the congregation of Beth Shalom approached the other local Jewish organizations to work together to sponsor the Shabbatones and was pleased that both Congregation Emanuel and the Lake Norman Jewish Congregation were interested in participating.
The members of the Shabbatones will share Friday night and Saturday morning Shabbat services in Statesville with Congregation Emanuel as guests of their special weekend with Rabbi Aaron Philmus, the congregation's Legacy Heritage Fellow from the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Founded in 2001, the Shabbatones specialize in popular American, Israeli and Jewish music, performing for a variety of audiences throughout the country. All of the Shabbatones arrangements are written by group members.
The event is free and open to the general public. Donations are appreciated.
