Pages start turning for The Big Read

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Ask most adults what they're reading these days, and all you'll get is a blank stare, followed by excuses.

People are too busy to think straight, let alone read a good book.

That argument has always confused me.

In my world, there's always time to read. Getting lost in a story settles my brain after a long, hectic day of running around. My nightstand is piled with books I've just finished or am planning to read. (Latest addiction — the Twilight series. I couldn't put them down!)

Working its way to the top of the pile right now is one of my all-time favorites, "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.

The Big Read kicks off in Iredell County on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Charles Mack Citizen Center and Mitchell Community College in Statesville.

For those not familiar with this initiative, it's an effort to get an entire community reading and talking about one book. It's been done in other cities with great success — turns out, people really do love to read, once you get them started.

Over the next month, there will be speakers, film festivals and other events surrounding this classic novel, all leading up to The Final Page closing ceremony on March 1.

So, grab a copy of the book and start reading. My copy has 331 pages. That's just 10 pages a day, which should be easy to fit in while you wait in the carpool line or sit on the sidelines at basketball practice.
