The western part of the state has been a hotbed of activity for Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) recently, if you believe reports submitted to examiner.com. The web site reported there was a sighting on Sunday and one on Monday in the area.

Elisa Baker pleads guilty to one drug charge
It took only 21 minutes to seal Elisa Baker’s fate in federal court Thursday, where she pleaded guilty to a drug conspiracy charge. She is expected to receive the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The plea agreement with the US Attorney’s office disposes the last pending charges against Baker, who is serving 14 to 18 years for the murder and dismemberment of her stepdaughter, Zahra Baker.

Adam Baker is expected to be in Superior Court Wednesday for a plea deal, according to his attorney Mark Killian. “We’ve worked out a plea agreement,” Killian told Superior Court Judge Beverly Beal when Baker’s case was called before the court.

Elisa Baker’s plea hearing for seven drug-related charges is scheduled for Thursday morning in US District Court in Charlotte. Baker, 43, was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 18 on seven drug charges. She is accused of illegal drug activity from May 2006 to October 2010, involving Hydrocodone, Oxycodone and Alprazolam. Oxycodone and Hydrocodone are prescription medications used to treat moderate pain. Alprazolam, also known as Xanax, is primarily used for anxiety.

More stolen goods found on Mayfield's property
Investigators returned to Jeremy Mayfield’s home with another search warrant Wednesday morning, this time seizing furniture from his home on Hudson Chapel Road in Catawba. The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office first served a search warrant on Mayfield’s home on Nov. 1, with officers from Lincoln and Iredell counties. While at his home, they took photos of items at Mayfield’s house, said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid. Wednesday’s search warrant was issued by the Hudson Police Department.

Adam Baker case continued in Caldwell, may go to grand jury
Adam Baker’s attorney said he was ready for trial in Caldwell County on Thursday. Baker is facing four misdemeanor charges and a host of worthless check charges. However, the case was continued to Jan. 5, and two of the complainants will be subpoenaed. Baker is charged with two counts of communicating threats, assault with a deadly weapon and failure to return rental property.

Land being cleared for Apple solar farm in Maiden
Apple Inc. is preparing to build a solar farm near its data center in Maiden. While this environmentally green measure may be exciting for those in the tech world, it’s anything but thrilling for the residents in the town. For the past several days, residents in Maiden and many people driving on US 321 have seen a thick cloud of smoke surrounding Startown Road. That smoke is Apple clearing more than 100 acres of land across from its data center, which opened earlier this year at 5977 Startown Road. It was reported earlier this year that the data facility will be a cloud-computing center for Apple.
