    Signing Day 2013 could be a banner day for Iredell

    National Signing Day came and went almost as fast as football season did. South Iredell showed once again it is the top of the class with athlete Quataye Smyre signing his National Letter of Intent to East Carolina. Smyre committed to the Pirates in March 2011.

  • Smyre signs NLI to go to ECU

    At 8:34 a.m. Wednesday, South Iredell’s Quataye Smyre and head coach Scott Miller were all smiles. Smyre put his name on the dotted line of a National Letter of Intent to attend East Carolina University on a football scholarship.

  • Viking girls peaking at the right time

    The Viking girls are on the rise at the right time of the season. South Iredell won four straight games starting with its victory Jan. 17 at home over East Burke and moved up to third in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference basketball standings.

  • Smith's recruiting is taking off

    The past eight days has been exciting for South Iredell linebacker LaChaston Smith. The junior received three football scholarship offers from Football Bowl Subdivision schools starting Jan. 17. Virginia made the first offer that day, Florida offered him a scholarship the next day, and Wake Forest extended an offer Tuesday.

  • 3A, 4A schools in Iredell still remain split

    On the issue of split conferences, the six high schools in Iredell County are split. The lines are drawn between the two classifications that will be in Iredell County when the new alignment takes effect in fall 2013. 

  • Viking girls honoring fallen teammate, friend

    South Iredell lost one of its own in December 2011 when Brittany Newton was killed in a fatal car accident. The Vikings came up with a way to honor the junior who spent two years on the junior varsity team and, this year, played on the summer league team before taking statistics during varsity games.

  • Cavs thump Vikings

    South Iredell ended the first half of its conference schedule Tuesday with a 73-45 matinee loss at home to second-place East Burke. The game started at 5:30 p.m. because Iredell-Statesville Schools has exams this week.

  • Raiders rally past War Eagles

    North Iredell was down to Davie County 12-6 after the first quarter. It rallied and wound up with a 48-43 win over the War Eagles.

  • Trojan girls remain unbeaten with win over Vikings

    With South Iredell’s Aaliyah Jackson and Miracle Campbell with two fouls apiece in the first quarter, undefeated Bandys took advantage of South Iredell’s reserve players. The Trojans pressed the Vikings into mistakes when trying to bring the ball up court and went on a 14-2 run to end the period.

  • South's boys swimming on the upswing

    South Iredell’s boys swimming team jumped two spots in their ranking among the county’s swimming programs. The Vikings finished third behind Saturday behind Lake Norman and West Iredell. The second-place Warriors edged the Vikings by only 13 points.

  • Another Lake Norman sweep

    West Iredell head coach David Koontz and Corey Deal exchanged an emphatic high five Saturday after the 2012 Iredell County Swimming Championship. They celebrated the Warriors accomplishing one of their goals for the season. The Warrior boys captured second place.  

  • Vikings lose free-throw battle to Wildcats

    Draughn took away South Iredell’s advantage inside to maintain control of Friday’s game from the start. Wildcats forward Hayley Broadwell led her team to a 67-54 win on Friday with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

  • South to honor Jackson at Friday's game

    Aaliyah Jackson achieved a milestone last week at the R&L/WSIC Holiday Classic. Jackson, a senior, finished the Vikings’ semifinal loss to North Iredell with 18 rebounds to give her 1,001 for her career.

    South Iredell had its heart broken by Forbush in dramatic fashion during last year’s holiday tournament girls consolation final, but the Vikings turned the tables on the Falcons Thursday.

  • No. 6 Vikings take third place in Classic

    For the second time in three days, South Iredell walked off the court with a win. The No. 6 Vikings held off No. 5 North Iredell in the closing minutes of the consolation game in the R&L/WSIC Holiday Classic for a 36-35 win.

    South Iredell’s boys basketball team flirted with one of the biggest stunners in tournament history Wednesday, but Ryan Scott got hot from the perimeter and carried Lake Norman to a closer-than-expected 49-35 win in the R&L/WISC Holiday Classic semifinals.

  • Raider girls back in Classic final

    Stacey Lunsford left Statesville’s gym to go home and take a nap. Lunsford was one of a few North Iredell players charged keeping South Iredell forward Aaliyah Jackson in check. The guard also made three key steals and three easy buckets in the second quarter to push North Iredell to victory.

    South Iredell’s girls basketball team withstood a tougher-than-expected test Tuesday from winless Statesville in the opening round of the R&L/WSIC Holiday Classic and pulled away in the second half for a 47-28 victory.

    The moods of South Iredell and West Iredell after the game could not have been more different on Tuesday. The Vikings beat the Warriors 48-28 on the first day of the R&L/WSIC Holiday Classic for their first victory of the season.

    The R&L/WSIC Holiday Classic tips off today at 2 p.m. with a girls division game between Statesville and South Iredell. It’s the first of 14 games over the next three days at Statesville High School, site of this year’s basketball tournament.

    The top-two seeds in this year’s R&L/WSIC Holiday Classic are the same two teams that met for the title last year. Statesville (7-3) and Lake Norman (5-3) are the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the three-day tournament and both have first-round byes.
