Summer is a perfect time to introduce children to the sport of fishing. Dunking worms and reeling in fish is an adventure for them. Plan ahead for a trip. Have rods and reels rigged and stowed aboard in a safe place. Inexpensive light action, closed faced spinning tackle, rigged with a #6 hook, a pinch-on spilt shot and a small float, is ideal. A carton of worms (red wigglers) is all the bait you'll need. Cut them in small pieces to last the entire trip.

Lake Norman is North Carolina's largest freshwater reservoir. The four counties surrounding it claim to have more than 40,000 registered boats within their boundaries. Pleasure boating is the lake's most popular warm weather activity. The bright sun and warm breezes of summer also attract plenty of fishermen.
The yo-yo action of a spoon fished vertically below the boat has tempted striped bass for decades. Deep jigging has proven to be equally effective in freshwater. Stripers, bass, white perch and catfish are lured by this technique.
Not sure which lure to use? Every fisherman has had that problem. To eliminate confusion, consider size, color and depth. Size: Small fish eat small baits. Big fish eat a variety of sizes. Understanding this is important, since there aren't usually that many large fish. For more strikes, match the size of the lure to the size of the targeted fish. When fishing is slow, downsize lures.
