McKinney Academy in Davidson is one of six charter school finalists announced on April 23 by state education officials.
The McKinney Academy Board of Directors, alongside Headmistress Andrea McKinney, will travel to Raleigh on May 5 to interview with the state board's Leadership for Innovation Committee. The committee will vote on the three open charter slots in June, with a full State Board of Education decision in July.
McKinney Academy is a private school located at 412 Armour Street in Davidson, North Carolina. The school opened in 2007 and currently enrolls Jr-Kindergarten through grade 4, with a plan to add subsequent grades each year. The school creates a balance between academics and creative arts; building confidence through art, music and drama. Spanish, physical education and computer technology are also part of the academy's daily curriculum. The school's charter application includes a continued emphasis on creative arts with an additional focus on nutrition/wellness education.
"Our goal is to create a positive learning environment in which every student builds a high level of confidence and has a chance to do his or her personal best, academically and personally," says Headmistress McKinney. "It is an honor to be selected by the State of North Carolina as a Charter School finalist. The opportunity to expand the McKinney Academy experience to all children in our community is an exciting prospect for us and the Lake Norman area."
If McKinney Academy is awarded a charter, it will operate as a tuition-based program for the upcoming 2009-10 school year with charter school status beginning for the 2010-11 school year.
