Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in all the negativity in today's world and overlook the positive things happening here in our own backyard.
Many of our community's greatest attributes were on display over the weekend.
Hundreds of people all of all ages turned out for the grand openings of the new Boys & Girls Club of the Piedmont and the new Fifth Street Shelter.
Featured prominently in the city's application for a national All America City award, these projects are a testament to the spirit of service that runs wide and deep in our community.
Boosters of these projects have worked tirelessly for the past five years to communicate the need for the services provided by the Boys & Girls Club and the Fifth Street Shelter. And then they raised more than $8 million.
That is an incredible feat for a community of any size and the finished facilities are living monuments to the vision and hard work that culminated in this weekend's public celebrations.
While raising money in this economic climate is tantamount to raising the Titanic, members of our community are finding other ways to give as well.
Over the weekend, hundreds of young people participated in the first Iredell Global Youth Service Day, fanning out across the county to help others in a handful of projects.
It was an awesome display of everything that's great about our community and a reminder that giving of yourself doesn't cost anything.
