Helmets needed at skate park, too

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Mooresville police say they will begin enforcing the "No Bikes" rule at the town's skate park on Iredell Avenue, following complaints from parents of skateboarders.
For the safety of the kids and the Town's own protection, we should begin enforcing the helmet requirement, too.
Signs posted at the facility, located next to the police station, prohibit pets, bikes, alcohol, smoking and profanity and require that helmets and protective gear be worn.
The latter regulation is ignored by skaters and has not been pressed by authorities. If it were, there's a good chance that some of the skateboarders would abandon the facility and ride their boards elsewhere around town, simply in protest to having to wear helmets.
We want kids to use this facility, which contains some great half-pipes and ... well ... that's all the skateboarding terminology we know. The fenced park is the safest haven possible for skateboarders.
But to make it even safer, the kids should be required to wear helmets. That will protect them and Town, the latter in a liability sense. And we would hope that all those great half-pipes, and other neat stuff, are enough to keep the skateboarders coming back.
