School opens as South end debuts 2 new elementaries

Tuesday's first day of school in Mooresville and Iredell County put the spotlight on three new area schools and a fourth that has a new look.

Students were welcomed to the new Rocky River Elementary on Rocky River Road, the Mooresville Graded School District's third elementary. And further to the south, on Presbyterian Road near the Mecklenburg line, Coddle Creek Elementary debuted as the Iredell-Statesville Schools' newest elementary.

The latter's opening allowed the former Mount Mourne Elementary to be transformed into an optional International Baccalaureate school.

In the MGSD, the district also opened a new middle school. Grades 7 and 8 now attend the Kistler Farm Road building that housed the original Mooresville Intermediate School. The former middle school building on Magnolia Street becomes an annex of Mooresville High School across the street.

Aside from typical first-day transportation issues, both MGSD and I-SS reported smooth area openings for the 2009-10 school year.

"For the most part, there was nothing out of the ordinary," said MGSD spokesperson Dreisa Sherrill. She noted that potential traffic issues along N.C. 3 and Kistler Farm Road were already being monitored.

Dawn Creason, spokesperson for I-SS, said traffic problems in the southern end of the district were similar to previous years with the majority of congestion near Lake Norman High School.

Otherwise, "with the exception of a few late buses, everything was fine."

Added MGSD Supt. Mark Edwards, "We worked very hard in preparation for this year and the first day. We saw lots of smiles from parents and students."

School fundraiser
This Saturday, from 2-6 p.m., Rocky River Elementary will welcome the public for a fundraiser and school-opening celebration.
Held at the school's campus on Rocky River Road in Mooresville, the "Community Back to School Celebration" will feature inflatables, food, music and plenty of fun for families, said Principal Felicia Burgess.
As the school's first fundraiser – also possibly one of the biggest fundraisers planned for the new school year – guests of all ages throughout the community are invited to the celebration.
Burgess noted that the back-to-school festival is not limited to just RRE or Mooresville Graded School District families, but the entire town and neighboring communities are welcome to attend.
Armbands will be sold at the Saturday event, which will include all activities and food.
The price of admission is $10 per child and $5 per adult. Burgess said a family of four can attend at a discounted price of $25. She added that no additional costs will be incurred at the celebration.
For more information, call RRE at 704-658-2740.
