Numbers don't lie.
Despite being outnumbered by a more than two-to-one ratio in the number of team entries, football players from Iredell County rivals Mooresville and Lake Norman piled up the stats helping land them roster spots on this past fall's I-Meck Conference all-conference team.
On the squad that was released earlier this week, players from both the Blue Devils and Wildcats camps dot the line-up on both offense and defense, also making room to claim one of the singled-out selections as well.
Selection to the All-I-Meck team was based on votes cast by the circuit's head coaches.
This marked the first full year of play as both I-Meck members and 4A class participants for the football programs at Mooresville and Lake Norman. They join others all housed within the Mecklenburg County area to form the seven-member league.
Of those picked to receive all-league status from the two neighboring teams, one stands above all the rest.
Mooresville High placekicker Michael Watson has been tabbed the I-Meck's Kicker of the Year. He is the only player from either the Devils or Wildcats to be cited for duty above and beyond the call of regular duty.
Players from both teams have secured all-conference spots on both the offensive and defensive sides of the scrimmage line.
For their offensive efforts, those cited from Mooresville include: running back Marshaun Edwards, wide receiver Dalton Pierce, and lineman Anthony Hill.
From Lake Norman, those recognized for their offensive production feature: running back James Cloud, wide receiver Jaquez Vanderburg, and linemen Kane Sherrill and Chris Timmins.
Defensively, from Mooresville: back Bakary Torrence.
And, on defense, from Lake Norman: lineman Chandler Caldwell, lineman Dirqual Ellis, linebacker Connor Donoghue, and back David Ray.
During the season, Lake Norman posted a 3-3 mark in all I-Meck games to finish in a multi-team tie for third place in the final league standings. It was also one rewarded with a first-round playoff berth. Mooresville posted a 0-6 record against all league foes to miss out on any postseason bid.
