It has become a must-attend event for drivers, racing personalities and fans alike.
"No kids, no husband," said Pennsylvania resident Cindy Arnold, who has missed Stocks for Tots only twice in two decades. "This is my vacation."
Arnold was in Mooresville again Tuesday for the 21st edition of the annual fundraiser at the Charles Mack Citizens Center, which raises money to fight child abuse and collects toys for abused children.
The event has grown substantially since its 1989 debut when it was held at the National Guard Armory.
"Don Miller has built this event as a must-attend for members of the racing community," said NASCAR on FOX announcer Mike Joy, who has attended Stocks for Tots each of the past nine years.
Every year, fans of all divisions of motorsports come to get their favorite drivers' autographs. Their price of admission includes a new, wrapped toy. The toys go to families who need help providing Christmas for their children and all money raised goes to the SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) center.
"The goal is always to raise as much money, and get as many toys, as possible for the children," said Stocks for Tots founder Don Miller, who wants the seasonal event to help children year round.
NASCAR legend Bobby Allison, NHRA's three-time champion Greg Anderson and up-and-coming driver Cory Joyce were among those available for autographs. However, this year most fans came to meet current NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Ryan Newman.
Along with many Mooresville residents, Newman fans came from places such as Atlanta, Ga. and Roanoke, Va.
"It's really cool what Don and these guys do for SCAN," Newman said. "It's my birthday and I'm here signing autographs if that tells you how much I love being here."
