NCDOT permanently closing railroad crossing in Iredell County

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close the Morrison Flats Road (State Road 1547) railroad crossing near Statesville on March 11. Signs alerting motorists of the closure will be posted today.

Traffic will be redirected to the Grayson Park Road crossing (S.R. 1546) located one eighth of a mile to the east. NCDOT has installed signals and gates at the crossing to improve safety and accommodate extra traffic.

The Morrison Flats Road crossing was identified for closure as part of an area crossing study. It is part of NCDOT's overall effort to reduce the number of redundant or low volume rail/highway at-grade crossings throughout the state.

When possible, the department works with communities to close or consolidate low volume or redundant crossings. Since 1993, NCDOT has closed more than 130 public at-grade rail crossings.
