Iredell-Statesville Schools and Mooresville Graded School District officials are wisely planning for life after the current economic recession.
At some point in the future, the economy will turn around, the job and housing markets will rebound and the influx of students will resume.
I-SS and MGSD will be ready to absorb the initial wave and have crafted plans to accommodate growth beyond that point. Earlier this week, superintendents Terry Holliday and Mark Edwards outlined plans for the next round of school construction projects for the county's school facilities task force. The $100 million price tag may have shocked some, but it's important to note that was a wish list and that Iredell County commissioners will decide how much money is spent and how the funds are raised.
We're impressed with the expanded academic programs that MGSD and I-SS, in particular, have added during recent years and plans to add in the coming year. The new International Baccalaureate program and magnet programs in I-SS will challenge the district's best and brightest students, while freeing up classroom space throughout the district.
There's little doubt that when we emerge from the current recession that Iredell County will attract new residents and businesses. And our school districts will be ready to meet their children's educational needs.
