Email about lottery winnings is a scam

»  Comments | Post a Comment

An email using FBI letterhead is circulating, telling people they have won $800,000, said Statesville Police Department Chief Tom Anderson.
The email, like many others before it, is a scam, Anderson said.
He said the email indicates the recipient has won $800,000 in a lottery and needs to send $500 in a Western Union wire transfer to claim the winnings.
The email uses the official FBI letterhead and contains a signature of the director, Robert Mueller, Anderson said.
Anderson said no legitimate lottery winner will have to come up with money upfront, and the FBI does not deal with the disbursement of lottery winnings.
He said the authentic letterhead might lead people to believe the email is legitimate, but it is bogus.
