Auditions set for 'West Side Story'

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Davidson Community Players will hold auditions throughout February for its upcoming production of the beloved musical "West Side Story," a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set in modern-day New York City.

The production hopes to field a talented, diverse cast of teens to fill these epic roles.

Teenagers of all ethnicities will sing and dance as members of two warring street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, whose hate for each other erupts in response to the fledgling relationship of Tony, a former Jet, and Maria, the sister of the Shark's leader. Truly an ensemble show, West Side Story promises great roles for all young actors, male and female, regardless of previous experience.

Auditions for high school students only will be held on:

February 5, 2:45 pm at Northwest School of the Arts

February 10, 2:45 pm at Hopewell High School

February 12, 2:45 pm at North Mecklenburg High School

February 12, 7:00 pm at Mooresville High School

Auditions for adults and youth ages 12 and up will be held on:

February 15, 2-6 pm at Armour Street Theatre, 307 Armour Street, Davidson and February 16, 6-10 pm at Davidson College Presbyterian Church

Auditionees need to attend only one of the audition sessions. All auditionees should prepare a song that shows off their vocal range. If possible, bring sheet music in the proper key, an accompanist will be provided. A one minute monologue is optional. Auditionees should wear comfortable clothes and shoes and be prepared to dance. They should also bring a recent picture and arrive no later than 90 minutes after the start of the audition call.

The production opens June 18, 2009 at the Duke Family Performance Hall on the campus of Davidson College. This professionally operated, Broadway-style theatre will offer an additional enrichment aspect for production participants. Questions about the production or the audition process should be directed to Melissa Ohlman-Roberge, 704-651-7863 or ncmor@aol.com.
