Clyburn mulling scholarship offers

»  Comments | Post a Comment

West Iredell's P.J. Clyburn was rattling off his list of scholarship offers when he paused, then began to chuckle.

"Actually, there's one more that I can't remember," he said with a laugh.

That's because so many schools are after the Warriors senior.

Clyburn boasts double-digit scholarship offers, including some from programs in the ACC, SEC and Big Ten conferences.

The versatile athlete has hit the road this summer as he showcases his talents to college football coaches.

"It's been a real good summer, really exciting," Clyburn said. "I've been traveling to work out for a lot of teams."

Clyburn's most recent visits were to Arkansas, Illinois and UNC Chapel Hill.

Illinois, which also heavily recruited former teammate Quan Rucker, was the first program to offer a scholarship.

"I liked Illinois a lot," Clyburn said. "The academics part is nice, I was impressed with that. It's far away from home, but it's one of my top schools. I was happy up there. They said they were looking forward to me being up there and making big plays."

In addition to Illinois and Arkansas, Clyburn has standing offers from FBS schools N.C. State, East Carolina and Kentucky. He plans on taking an official visit to Kentucky later this summer.

Chapel Hill is one of several major programs that has shown serious interest in Clyburn without making an offer.

Clyburn made the R&L all-county team at both a wide receiver and safety last year.

As a junior in 2008, Clyburn had more than 600 yards from scrimmage on offense. At safety, he made 70 tackles and had five interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

Clyburn was also voted to the Associated Press All-State team as a kick returner.

"A lot of coaches have mentioned to me that they want me to return kicks for them, too," Clyburn said.

Clyburn is mainly being recruited as a safety, although UNC worked him out as linebacker.

Some schools will let Clyburn decide whether he wants to play offense or defense.

"I'll play wherever they need me," Clyburn said. "As of right now, I'm just waiting for the right moment to commit to a school. I'm just chillin' right now."
