An out-of-state phone call helped Statesville police discover an elaborate counterfeiting operation.

A woman living in Florida advised Statesville police that her credit card information had been stolen, and charges were made at the Lowe's Home Improvement stores in Statesville and Troutman.

During the subsequent investigation, police were led to a home in Statesville, where they found more than $450,000 in counterfeit checks and money orders.

The value of the counterfeit items could increase as the investigation continues and officers have an opportunity to sort through more receipts and information.

A suspect has been arrested, but investigators are withholding the individual's identity because the investigation is ongoing.

They believe other individuals may be involved.

The money orders and checks seized ranged from $845 to nearly $3,000.

The scam can be presented to unsuspecting individuals in numerous ways.

Signs to watch for are individuals contacting you saying you've won a sweepstakes contest and asking you to cash a check for a business and keep a percentage of the money.

Investigator Al Pettit said authentic companies aren't going to ask individuals to collect and cash money for them.

He said people should also be mindful of companies saying you've invested in them or sweepstakes contest.

"If you didn't enter a sweepstakes, how could you win?" he said.

Chief Tom Anderson said people are more susceptible to falling victim to scams involving money during tough economic times.

"People are vulnerable, but don't fall victim to this type of scam," Anderson said.
The investigation is ongoing.
