Driver walks away from tractor-trailer crash

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A woman escaped serious injury early Tueseday morning when the tractor-trailer she was driving hit a guardrail and plunged down an embankment on Interstate 77 around the 47 mile marker.

The crash happened just before 2 a.m. on I-77 south, between Statesville and Troutman, and one lane of southbound I-77 is closed and is expected to remain closed through around noon Tuesday.

Emergency crews responded to the crash, and found the truck, which was carrying PVC pipe, down the embankment. The truck collided with several trees, and the cab was crushed.

The driver was pinned in the wreckage, and a helicopter from Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte responded to the scene.

However, after members of the Iredell County and Troutman rescue squads, cut the woman from the crushed cab, she walked out of the wreckage and up the embankment with the assistance of a couple of members of the rescue squad.

She later refused to be taken to a hospital and was treated on the scene by EMS.

The contents of the truck will have to be offloaded and then the remains of the truck pulled up the embankment.

Authorities urge motorists use caution in the area as the interstate will be down to one lane.
