Area military veterans will soon have a new downtown Mooresville gathering place.
Following the May 3 death of Richard Warren and the subsequent closing of his Pat's Coffee Shop, veterans were left without a downtown hub to share their memories and memorabilia and continue the efforts started by Warren 14 years ago.
But after several weeks of casually meeting at the Bob Evans restaurant at Exit 36 and searching for a permanent venue, a new location was found at 128 S. Main St., only a block away from Pat's.
In mid-May, veterans and volunteers began relocating military jackets, photos, flags and other mementos to their new home, called the Welcome Home Veterans museum, 128 S. Main St., across from John Franklin Moore Park.
Created as the hub of Welcome Home Veterans, Inc., Brown said the museum will include a coffee shop – named Richard's Coffee Shop in honor of Warren – serving cold sandwiches, pastries, coffee and other small items.
A "soft opening" for the museum is planned for July 4 at 9 a.m. Free coffee, donuts and soft drinks will be distributed, and there will be live music.
