My 20-year-old daughter works at a local restaurant. After she finished her shift on a recent Saturday night, she was making a purchase at the cash stand with her discount card (35% off).
There was a man behind her in the line and she told the cashier to use her card for his purchase as well. This is not how she is to use her card, but I have always tried to teach my children to show kindness to others. The transaction was completed and the man and my daughter left the building.
The next day, Sunday, a phone call was made to the establishment about my daughter's actions. Not the kind of phone call one would expect about a person who saved you 35% on your food purchase the night before.
This phone caller called to complain that my daughter was rude because she did not also share her discount with the caller's daughter-in-law whom she claimed was further back in line.
My daughter was sent home from work that day, a big money making day, and suspended for misuse of her discount card. She could lose a job, that she has had for four years, for doing a random act of kindness for these guests.
My daughter has bills and other obligations she has to fulfill and thanks to this caller she not only lost pay on Sunday, but may lose her job altogether -- a job that gives her insurance and paid vacations, all because she was trying to someone a little money.
