Home, sweet home

Last week, during a speech to some of Statesville's future leaders, Mayor Costi Kutteh issued an invitation for all those gathered to think long and hard about the place they call home.

For as long as you live here, he said, Statesville needs to be the place you get homesick for, the place you love the most and the one you invest your energy in.

It's a spirit the mayor and his family have embraced for decades and one we would all do well to adopt. In a time when home improvement has become something of a national pastime, it's a good idea to consider our larger home — the city we share and love. There are hundreds of ways, big and small, each person lucky enough to call Statesville home can make it better.

The idea is to find a passion that calls to you and to pitch in.

Love to read? Consider sharing your time with an elementary school.

Enjoy the outdoors? Take a stroll downtown and pick up litter.

There are countless ways to get involved. Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, raise funds for the March of Dimes, collect canned goods for Fifth Street Shelter Ministries or lend your talents to the Boys & Girls Club.
It can be as simple as mowing an elderly neighbor's lawn or as complex as leading a crusade to support local merchants. But we all have a contribution to make here at home.
What will yours be?
