A bright future

With a small staff and scant resources, Teen Health Inc. continues to make a huge difference in the lives of at-risk adolescents.

Through mentoring and programming, the United Way agency provides local teens with the information and skills needed to navigate modern pitfalls like promiscuity and apathy while giving them valuable life lessons that they don't always acquire at home or school.

This week, some 21 participants in the organization's Teen Entrepreneurship Program showed off a fraction of what they've learned while being honored for their individual achievements. The graduates now know how to write a business plan, market their products and services, evaluate their competition and balance the books.

As part of the program, the students started their own businesses specializing in car washing, lawn care, personal shopping and other pursuits.

Congratulations to Heather Jackson, May Lee, Page Reams, Katelyn Root, Shelton Winchell, Shoua Xiong, Jalen Lackey, Connor Lute, Nick Bray, Brittany Loftin, Patrick Marcus, Gabrielle Burke, Emma Bautista, Craig Dulin, Fernanda Espino, Nicole Gordon, Imari Leak, Rashonda Moses, Amber Nutting and Stephanie White.

We expect big things from this group in the future.

More importantly, they have every reason to expect big things of themselves.
