World War II Veteran Andrew L. Pendleton will be the keynote speaker at Mitchell Community College's Veteran's Day program on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. on the Circle. The public is invited to attend.
Pendleton served in the United States Army Air Force in North Africa and Italy in World War II. He flew 27 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Air medal (three times), European Service medal with 10 battle stars, and the World War II Victory Medal Presidential Unit Citation (three times). He is a senior partner with Pendleton, Leonard & Krider, Architects of Statesville and is a member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He is licensed to practice architecture in 14 states. Pendleton is the past president of the Western North Carolina Council of Architects, vice chairman of the Duke Endowment Committee for Rural Methodist Churches, past president of Statesville Crime Stoppers, and is the past vice president of the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Statesville for the past 56 years. Pendleton has had a lifetime interest in aviation and has been a licensed pilot for most of his adult life. He is a native of Elizabeth City, NC and resides in Statesville. He has three children and six grandchildren.
The program will also honor local veterans including members of the College's faculty and staff. Statesville Senior High School's JROTC, under the direction of Frank Gammon, Senior Army Instructor, will present and retire the colors.
